British involvement in Sri Lanka began in 1796 when they took coastal areas from the Dutch. In 1815, the Kandyan Convention brought the whole island under British rule. The country gained independence in 1948. British rule introduced centralized administration, English education, legal systems, and infrastructure like railways and plantations, but it also created social inequalities and economic dependence on exports.
