History & Colonization Study Tour

- University Tour
British involvement in Sri Lanka began in 1796 when the British took control of coastal areas from the Dutch during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1815, following the signing of the Kandyan Convention, the British formally annexed the Kandyan Kingdom, bringing the entire island under colonial rule. Ceylon gained independence peacefully in 1948. The legacy of British rule remains visible today in its legal framework, education system, railway network, and plantation regions. The British also implemented centralized administration, English education, legal reforms, and civil service systems. While these developments modernized infrastructure, they also reinforced social hierarchies and economic dependency on exports.
